![]() The film shows the diversity of people involved, including believers and non-believers, overseas visitors and First Nations peoples. ![]() When we mix our skills with our passion to do God’s work in the world, we are using God’s gifts. The passion of all people featured is obvious. Others became more familiar names, such as founder of Australian Geographic Dick Smith and botanist Professor David Bellamy. Most protesters spent some time on the site and then returned to their regular day jobs, for example as school teachers. Interviews with Bob Brown, Uncle Jim Everett and various other key people involved in the protest are featured throughout the movie. This eight-year-long campaign ultimately saved the Franklin River being flooded by stopping the construction of a dam designed to generate hydroelectricity.Īs Oliver retraces his late father’s 14-day journey down the river, there are flashbacks to both his protestor father’s trip and the lengthy grassroots campaign that helped “No Dams” supporter Bob Hawke win the Federal Election, as well as to the decisive 1983 High Court Tasmanian Dam case decision in Brisbane. The documentary feature, Franklin, interweaves Oliver Cassidy’s solo rafting trip down the Franklin River, his personal life journey, his late father’s rafting trip 40 years earlier and the history of the “No Dams” campaign. Our names had been taken by the police – not for safety reasons, but as part of the intimidation process to discourage environmentalists and potential protestors who might join the ongoing “No Dams” blockade. My destination was either Strahan or the protest site. It was pouring with rain, and continued to do so for the next few days. A biconvex lens is called a converging lens.Forty years ago this coming January I was standing with about 10 others on the banks of the upper Franklin River in western Tasmania, ready for a 10-day rafting trip. Parallel rays of light can be focused in to a focal point. This is the kind of lens used for a magnifying glass. ![]() There are two kinds of lens.Ī biconvex lens is thicker at the middle than it is at the edges. LensesĪ lens is simply a curved block of glass or plastic. The light bends away from the normal line.Ī higher refractive index shows that light will slow down and change direction more as it enters the substance. If light travels enters into a substance with a lower refractive index (such as from water into air) it speeds up. If light enters any substance with a higher refractive index (such as from air into glass) it slows down. Refractive index of some transparent substancesĪll angles are measured from an imaginary line drawn at 90° to the surface of the two substances This line is drawn as a dotted line and is called the normal. On the other hand, if the light is entering the new substance from straight on (at 90° to the surface), the light will still slow down, but it won’t change direction at all. Angle of the incident ray – if the light is entering the substance at a greater angle, the amount of refraction will also be more noticeable.Change in speed – if a substance causes the light to speed up or slow down more, it will refract (bend) more. The amount of bending depends on two things:
